Dance academy
The Sports Centre runs a Dance Academy for children from the age of 2 ½ years old to 16 years old.
Pre-School
Pre School Dance is a fun class for children from 2 1/2 years to school age encouraging expression and co-ordination through movement and dance, covering ballet, tap, modern/jazz and musical mime. The children are entered regularly for medal tests in musical mime, which helps to build their confidence and get them used to the structure of the more formal dance examinations, which they work towards when they are older.
Graded Dance Classes
Students follow The British Theatre Dance Association syllabus in ballet, tap and modern/jazz. All examination are accredited by the Council for Dance Education and Training. Examinations are encouraged but are not compulsory and students can progress to the next level when they achieve the required standard.
Shows
The Dance Academy places special emphasis on performing. It aims to ensure that all students have opportunities to perform in front of a live audience. This helps to give them greater discipline and confidence, all students are invited to take part in a bi-annual show (Danceforce) which is usually staged at the Anvil or The Haymarket Theatre in Basingstoke.
Fees
Pre-school & beginners dance fees are £13.50 a month and include one 45 minute class per week.
Graded dance class fees are £27.00 a month and include up to three 30 minute classes per week.
Classes run 42 weeks per year around the holidays.
Bank holiday classes will run on a Tuesday from 2.00pm.
New Students / Taster Class
Students will start at Beginners/Preparatory level unless they hold certificates for dance grades taken elsewhere. Before committing to direct debit, children may have one 'taster' session. Prices are £4 per Pre-school/Beginners class and 3 per Graded Class
Medal test classes
The Medal Test is a performance based award system offered by the British Theatre Dance Association (BTDA). Candidates perform in front of BTDA dance examiner and a small audience of family and friends, and if successful, they receive their award, certificate and a report sheet with comments from the examiner. There are 15 levels for candidates to progress throgh. The medal tests are an excellent way to gain stage experience, confidence and performance skills. All classes take place on Saturday.
